Manoj Bajpayee is quite infamous for his status as a serious actor who has done roles that are mostly dramatic and prominent. With gems like Gangs of Wasseypur, Aligarh, Budhia Singh- Born to Run, Raajneeti, Kaun, Satya in his kitty, he is widely respected in the industry for his sheer brilliance in portraying a character so realistically. While this being widely accepted, it came as a surprise to his fans when the iconic ‘Sardar khan’ turned to dance to relieve his tensions in the brilliant short film Taandav! Surely in Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1, he was definitely comical when he was chased by his first wife, being caught in a brothel. This is, however, different to how he portrays the honest Constable Tambe in Taandav.
Constable Tambe, tired of facing the challenges of life as an honest constable who despite getting a lump sum of money gives it over to the authorities, not only gets shunned by his wife but also lets down his colleagues who like normal mortals could not resist greed.
The honest constable unable to provide fruitfully to his family, considers how being honest led to zilch, and things that were essential such as quality education for his child came at a hefty price.
At the point of a gun, he punishes two men by threatening them to dance! The view of Manoj Bajpayee shaking a leg to the beats is so extraordinary, that it catches the interest of one and all.
Devashish Makhija, the director of the short film has done an amazing job in bringing to life such a beautiful story. This is a fairly simple concept, but it has been woven so creatively without the end being mundane. Instead the visuals are so vivid and spectacular that Taandav can be viewed with the same enthusiasm again and again!
