    Ashgari Bai
This film is a charming portrait of Ashgari Bai, one of the oldest exponents alive, of the dying art of Dhrupad, the most orthodox form of Hindustani Classical music. She is also probably the only woman to have espoused this austere and invocative form of music. And she has been conferred national awards including the Padmshree. Ironically however, she remains a curiously anonymous and lonely figure today, battling against insurmountable odds in a small town of Madhya Pradesh in India.  Showcasing her wit, her forthrightness, her charm and her indomitability, this documentary is the story of a precious gem of India who insists on living life of her own terms. An engrossing 45-minute documentary on the life and times of this extraordinary lady. --- Afternoon on Sunday Adoring camera … superb editing … the finished product, like its subject, is perfect.   --- Outlook The documentary is also, perhaps, the story of any number of musicians in India who have slipped into poverty, loneliness and ablivion. --- Times of India Fortunately, her story was captured on film before it was too late … a charming film. --- Mid-Day

    Anuradha
Nirmal, a young man becomes a doctor, and starts his practice in Nand Gaon. He meets Anuradha Roy, a well-known singer and falls in love with her and they both get married. Anuradha gives up her singing and becomes a housewife. She soon gives birth to a daughter. But then a whirlpool of events occur which jeopardize her marriage. The film went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 11th Berlin International Film Festival in 1961. The song, Haay Re Woh Din Kyun Na Aaye, composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar, inspired Laxmikant - Pyarelal to compose another Raag Kalavati song "Kabhi To Miloge Jeevan Saathi" ("Sati Savitri", 1964). Sachin Bowmick, the story writer of Anuradha, said that he had based the film on Madame Bovary. Passionately Purposeful & Purposefully Passionate The movie “Anuradha” (1960) by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, starring the beautiful Leena Naidu and the intense Balraj Sahni, is a simple but engaging film. The film went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 11th Berlin International Film Festival (1961). Interestingly the film's music was composed by Pt. Ravi Shankar, in one of his rare affairs with Hindi cinema It is a story of many things but primarily about passion and purpose... Anuradha Roy (Naidu) is a passionate and popular radio singer and the daughter of a rich man. She falls in love with the idealistic Dr. Nirmal Chowdhary (Sahni) who's sole purpose in life is to serve a village. Against the wishes of her father and in spite of the hesitations of Nirmal himself, they get married. It results in a banal everyday existence but it is only after the birth of their daughter that she realizes the gravity of her choice. Her husband is too busy for anyone or anything. The household chores consume her. She quits singing. The point here is not about the very obvious, 'selfless Indian woman gives up all for the self centred Indian man'. That is a fact and there are much more nuanced and a lot more informed thoughts available. What is interesting here is that Anuradha chose to give up her passion without any force or obligation. And that Nirmal did not give up his purpose, even for the one person who gave up everything for him. It seems the difference comes down to the two words: passion and purpose... Passion is emotional, Purpose is existential. Putting dictionary definitions aside, let's try this analogy: purpose is a rocket and passion is the fuel. We need both to be or create something which is beyond our everyday existence, but it is the purpose that defines our journey. Passion will get you going and will keep you moving, but it will burn away and you will have to keep adding more of it. Another thing is that one can have multiple passions. A person can be passionate about biking and travel and equally love her work. Anuradha enjoyed singing, she considered it her life, but when her love was not equally reciprocated by her husband, she used her household duties as an excuse to relegate her singing to the backburner. It did not mean that she did not want to sing any more or that she did not miss it, but that it was something she was no longer as passionate about. With Nirmal however, his service to the poor was a purpose that transcended everything else. We can safely assume that it was not the selfless dimensions of his work that motivated him but the purpose itself. As Frederick Buechner said, “purpose is the place where your deep gladness meets the world's needs.” While it is only those, like Dr Nirmal, driven solely by their purpose, that end up making a dent in the universe, the side effects are felt by their loved ones, especially the spouses. It is there that purpose can seem selfish, self-centred. And that is one of the reasons why a lot of people give up on their passions and worse on their life's purpose. And then as with Anuradha, life becomes a burden. What is your purpose and your passions? Share with us in the comments section...

    Dombivali Fast
Madhav Apte, the protagonist is a middle class citizen who is struggling to make the ends meet. We see a slow mental breakdown of this individual as he decides to counter the injustices, first by simple questioning and later, as he loses the mental balance, through violence.   As India gears towards becoming a developed nation, it still battles with the age-old feudal mindset. The corruption and inflation make it difficult for a middle class person to make living with dignity. It is not just the judiciary or the corporate greed that is the question here, but a lack of basic amenities such as potable water, that really get to the protaganist.   The film ends on a pessimistic note which in a way does reflect the reality. The pace of the film develops at a natural pace and gains momentum as it progresses.
